  • The Northfield City Council last night voted 4 to 3 in favor of authorizing the Mayor, City Administrator and mayor pro-tem to negotiate and approve contracts for Flaherty and Hood as civil attorneys for the city and Campbell Knutson as prosecutorial city attorneys. The selection process and hiring locally vs. hiring firms from out-of-town were key topics of discussion before the vote. KYMN will have more coverage of last night’s council meeting throughout the day and throughout the week. 
  • (AP) A Lakeville grandmother who accidentally smothered her infant grandson has been spared a lengthy prison sentence and will instead serve 45 days in jail and 10 years probation. Tina Louise Miller-Steiner insisted her pain and suffering for causing her grandson’s death was punishment enough.She pleaded guilty in Dakota County to second-degree manslaughter in the death of 6-week-old Evan Berney. Judge Timothy Wermager on Monday also ordered the 46-year-old grandmother to pay for the child’s funeral. Miller-Steiner told police she drank two martinis and some wine against her doctor’s advice while caring for the baby last May. She says she put the baby down for a nap and laid down beside him, smothering him in her sleep.
  • Rice County District Court Judge William Johnson is resigning effective January 8th, 2010. Johnson’s resignation was submitted to and accepted by Governor Pawlenty. Judge Johnson was originally appointed to the bench in December 1976 and took office in January 1977. Johnson says he has enjoyed his judicial career and feels privileged to have had the opportunity to serve, but the time has come to step down from the position. He hopes to continue to serve the people of Rice County, the third judicial district and the state of Minnesota.
