  • St. Olaf’s Regents Hall of Natural and Mathematical Sciences has earned platinum certification—that’s the highest rating attainable—from the US Green Building council’s leadership in Energy and Environmental Design or LEED rating system. The nearly 200,000 square-foot, $63 million dollar building is the largest and most complex academic facility in the nation to earn the rating. St. Olaf President, David Anderson says “the LEED Platinum designation for Regents Hall demonstrates St. Olaf’s leadership among American colleges and Universities in sustainability programs.” LEED measures a construction project’s use of state-of-the-art strategies for sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality.
  • 25 Bridge Square could be getting a significant face lift. That’s if local businessman, Jerry Anderson’s proposed construction project gets the go ahead. Anderson is behind the effort to replace the building that currently houses Community Resource Bank with an historic replica of the original 3-story National Bank building which occupied the space until 1965. The new 49,000 square foot building would be used for office space and will cost an estimated $8 million dollars. The Northfield Heritage Preservation Commission meet on November 19th to discuss the project. They need to approve the building design before the project moves forward.
  • Carleton College Professor, Laura Goering has won a 2009 National Outdoor book award for her children’s book, Whistling Wings. Goering has taught Russian language and literature at Carleton for 20 years. Whistling Wings is her first published children’s book. The book is about Marcel, a tundra swan who’s left behind by others when he stops at a lake while flying south. The book is illustrated by Laura Jaques.
