  • A Northfield businessman was sentenced on Tuesday in US District Court to four years in prison for one count of distribution of controlled substances. 41-year old Mark Andrew Goetz of Prior Lake pleaded guilty in July to selling nearly 350 tablets of Xanax and more than 1,200 Oxycontin pills to an undercover informant. Goetz owned the drug disposal company, Pharmaceutical Returns on Division Street. The company was authorized by the DEA to collect controlled substances and return them to drug companies for credit or destroy them at approved incinerators.
  • The Northfield city council have unanimously approved three actions related to the 4th Street Reconstruction project. They voted to receive a feasibility report and call for an improvement hearing. They will also schedule a public hearing on the proposed assessment for the project. The improvements proposed would upgrade the current street, water, sanitary and storm sewer systems. The roughly $3 million dollar project would be financed through a combination of Municipal State Aid funds, bonding, assessments, enterprise funds and the Master Development Fund.
  • St. Olaf and Carleton have both made the Open Doors list of baccalaureate institutions with students studying abroad. St. Olaf had the largest number of students studying abroad during the 2007-2008 academic year. Carleton ranks first for students participating in a mid-length study abroad experience. The Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange survey about 2,800 accredited US institutions each year. The report has been published since 1954.
