- UPDATE…….10:27AM……………….26 year-old shooting suspect Joshua Barron faces 6 felony counts in Rice County, including attempted murder. Barron was apprehended early Wednesday morning in Aitkin—after he ran out of the house he was hiding in, got on a snowmobile and led police on a 20-minute chase. Authorities in both counties are working together as the investigation continues. Northfield Police Deputy Chief Chuck Walerius says Barron is still in Aitkin County jail. Barron faces 6 felony charges there, including fleeing a peace officer, possession of drugs, including Vicodin and possession of stolen property. Walerius says Northfield authorities plan to go to Aitkin on Monday to further investigate the stolen truck and snowmobiles Barron was in possession of, as police continue to search for the rifle and other evidence of the shooting in Northfield. Deputy Chief Walerius says the investigation moving forward will also focus on those who helped Barron hide from authorities. He says those who aided and abetted Barron face virtually the same charge as if they committed the crime themselves. Barron is suspected of shooting 51-year-old Loran Sirek in Northfield on Monday following an argument. Barron faces up to 84 years in prison and $78,000 in fines if found guilty of the Rice County charges. KYMN will have continuing coverage of this story as there are developments.
- (AP) Emergency crews in Farmington last night freed a man, who was trapped in a grain silo for more than eight hours. Farmington police say Mark Malecha was pulled from the grain silo at Feely’s Elevator about 7:45 p.m. Police got the call saying he was trapped about 11:15 a.m. Police Chief Brian Lindquist says Malecha was inside the grain bin chipping away some frozen corn when he slipped, or some grain shifted. Lindquist says Malecha landed at the bottom of the silo with a hill of corn above him. Digging him out without disturbing the grain above him was slow work for emergency crews. Malecha remained conscious and talking, and seemed to be in good shape when he was hoisted out of the silo. He was taken to a hospital for further exams.
