- The Northfield City council convenes tonight for a meeting and work session. On the agenda: the council is scheduled to consider approval of the annexation of about 450 acres of property in Bridgewater Township. The council is also scheduled to decide how to finance facilities in the recently-approved five-year capital improvement plan. The council is looking at new police and fire buildings and a library expansion. The council will weigh several financing options, including bonding, a referendum or applying for state grant money. KYMN will have continuing coverage of tonight’s meeting throughout the week.
- The Northfield Area Chamber of Commerce has named the Cannon Valley Veterinary Clinic its business of the year in 2010. The chamber cited the clinic’s expanded operations in the area of pharmaceutical compounding for the hog industry and expanded veterinary services among the reasons for the honor. The chamber also cited the clinic’s $4 million investment in a new 62,500 square feet addition to its existing facilities, as well as a $3 million investment in FDA-approved pharmaceutical compounding equipment and fixtures for the new facility. And, the clinic created 25 plus new jobs, including veterinarians, vet technicians, a distribution manager and accountants. The chamber has also recognized Leif Knecht as its 2010 business person of the year. The chamber says Knecht has encouraged and participated in economic development efforts that have led to significant improvements in the Northfield area and has provided the community with his leadership, volunteer time, financial contributions and business knowledge. The chamber hosts its annual meeting and recognition banquet on Thursday, March 11 at the Grand Event Center.
- A 37-year old Lakeville man has been charged with criminal vehicular homicide and criminal vehicular injury charges in Dakota County. Jeffrey Martin had already been charged with child endangerment and 3rd degree DWI (both gross misdemeanors) in connection with a a fatal crash in Lakeville on Christmas eve. 88-year old Everett Letterley was killed in that crash, and his wife was injured. Martin’s blood alcohol level was .17 and he was driving with his 3 children, ages 10, 9 and 4. A judge has ordered that Martin submit to alco-sensor monitoring in addition to the $18,000 bail he already posted.
