A 59-year old Northfield man whose car overturned on Division Street in front of Hogan Brothers on New Year’s Eve has been formally charged for the incident. Genaro Nogueira faces gross misdemeanor charges for driving while intoxicated and for careless driving. According to the complaint, Nogueira walked away after the incident and a witness was able to provide police with the information that led to Nogueira’s arrest. There were no injuries involved in the accident. Nogueira has a previous alcohol-related offense on his record. He faces up to 2 years and 90 days in jail, $7,000 in fines or both if convicted of the charges.- (AP) Minnesota lawmakers say a loophole in state law is allowing lenders to take money away from people who want an advance on their paycheck. Sen. Kevin Dahle of Northfield and Rep. Jim Davnie of Minneapolis are due to discuss legislation Wednesday to change payday lending practices. They say the technicality has cost Minnesotans nearly $6 million since 2003. An industry group for payday lenders has resisted similar legislation elsewhere by noting that its charges are cheaper than the alternatives for desperate borrowers.
- Local filmmaker Paul Krause premieres his film Harvest tomorrow night in the Northfield high School auditorium. The film chronicles the creation of Ray Jacobson’s public sculpture of the same name from start to finish. The film details how people of Northfield helped contribute to the making of the sculpture. The sculpture was originally commissioned to help celebrate Northfield’s 150th anniversary in 2005. The film starts at 7:30, again that’s in the Northfield High School Auditorium tomorrow night. A reception with Ray Jacobson will follow the film.
