  • A date has been set for leaders of Northfield and Waterford Township to get together and discuss their annexation relationship. At the April 13th council work session, the two sides will talk about a 30-year joint resolution that has Northfield paying tax reimbursements to Waterford as part of an annexation agreement. The city attorney for Northfield has said the agreement is not valid. An attorney for Waterford has argued that it is. Mayor Mary Rossing says one of the goals of a good annexation agreement is that it’s mutually beneficial for all parties involved.
  • A 43-year-old Northfield man is charged in Rice County for the two fires set in town on Tuesday. Mark Allen Cole faces four felony counts of arson. According to the criminal complaint, Cole set his home on fire, then drove a few blocks to the Northfield city hall parking lot and started a fire in his car, burning two other vehicles in the process. Cole was apprehended near the city hall. According to the complaint, when police asked Cole for his home address he replied, “You can’t miss it. I started it on fire.” Unemployed and under financial stress, Cole told police he just couldn’t take it anymore. Cole also made references to the man who flew an airplane into the IRS building in Texas in February. Cole faces up to 55 years in prison, $85,000 in fines, or both if convicted of all the charges.
  • The Northfield Area Chamber of Commerce honors its business of the year and business person of the year in a special ceremony tonight. The Cannon Valley Veterinary Clinic was named business of the year in 2010. The chamber cited the clinic’s $4 million investment in a new 62,500 square feet addition as one of the reasons for the honor. And, the clinic has created 25 plus new jobs. The chamber has also recognized Leif Knecht as its 2010 business person of the year. Knecht, who owns Knecht’s Nurseries and Landscaping says he takes pride in providing the best possible service to customers and the community. The chamber hosts its annual meeting and recognition banquet tonight at the Grand Event Center. The event gets underway at 5:30.
