  • The Northfield city council has taken another step in the site selection process for new police and fire buildings. The council voted unanimously to consider sites for new police and fire stations recommended by the Steering Committee. The recommendation proposes building a new police station on one of three sites (Cowles, Gleason and Jasnoch), and building a new fire station at Woodley and Highway 3. City administrator Joel Walinski has met with MnDOT, the owner of the property at that location. MnDOT has found another piece of property where it could relocate, but it could be a two to three month period before MnDOT knows whether it would acquire the site. The option supported by the council last night features a high-range projected cost of $10.6 million and a low-range projected cost of around $8.6 million. On June 15th the council will decide how the projects will be financed, with a referendum and capital improvement bonds two potential options. KYMN will have more on the site selection process and last night’s city council meeting throughout the day.
  • The filing period for municipal offices began yesterday morning at 8:00. As of yesterday, council member Jon Denison has filed for re-election in the 4th ward. Nathan Kuhlman has also filed in the 4th ward. And Suzie Nakasian has filed in ward 1. Filing ends June 1st at 5:00 p.m. A primary election will be held on Tuesday, August 10th and the general election will be held in Northfield on Tuesday, November 2nd.Anyone interested in filing must file an affidavit of candidacy with the city clerk and must file a public disclosure statement.
