The Faribault ex-nurse charged with encouraging a man from the UK and a woman from Ontario to commit suicide via internet chats has entered a preliminary plea of not guilty, citing mental deficiency. At a hearing today in Rice County, the judge granted a request by William Melchert-Dinkel’s attorney for a mental health evaluation for his client. Melchert-Dinkel’s attorney also moved to dismiss charges for lack of probable cause and to suppress confessions and evidence discovered as a result of confessions. The judge has given the defense 30 days to submit a brief on legal issues, the state has 30 days to respond.
