Listen Fridays at 9:00am (replayed on Saturday also at 9am) to Paula Granquist’s “Art Zany: Radio for the Imagination”
Paula’s Guest/Topic this week: Paula’s guests today are from the Northfield Arts Guild theater production of The Dark at the Top of the Stairs. Terry Allen, the director of the show, professor emeritus of theatre arts and director of University Theatre at UW-Eau Claire, taught classes for 20 years in acting, stage movement, directing, playwriting and theatre history. The Dark at the Top of the Stairs is his first production for the Northfield Arts Guild. Rob Schanilec plays Rubin in this production. We recently saw him on the Guild stage as Titus in Curious Savage and he has performed in several other local plays. Outside of theater, he has 20+ years experience in the graphics and printing industry and is the owner of By All Means Graphics in Northfield. His company publishes the monthly Northfield Entertainment Guide.
The play The Dark at the Top of the Stairs, originally nominated for 7 Tony Awards, is a 1920′s drama that centers on Rubin Flood. While searching for a new job, Rubin Flood must deal with his wife’s unrealistic demands, his shy daughter, and bullies picking on his pre-teen son. A tragic event brings all their fears into focus and teaches them to shed light on their fears to dispel them.
