The Northfield city council has approved a letter to be sent to the USPS District Area Manager requesting the postal service delay its decision to close the downtown Northfield post office.
City councilor and Save the Downtown Post Office task force member Suzie Nakasian said at last night’s council meeting that following recommendations from Congressman John Kline, the language of the letter would be changing somewhat from an earlier draft. The intent of the new letter would be the same, but instead of asking officials to rescind the decision to close the downtown post office, the council would request a delay of the decision in order for an alternative plan to be developed. The council’s vote authorizing the letter was unanimous. The USPS announced in early April its decision to consolidate services from the downtown post office to the carrier annex south of town as a cost-cutting measure. The final decision on the consolidation is currently scheduled for June 5th.
