Listen Fridays at 9:00am (replayed on Saturday also at 9am) to Paula Granquist’s “Art Zany: Radio for the Imagination”
Paula’s Guest/Topic this week:
It’s almost summer and on ArtZany! Radio is talking about summer gardens! My guests Jerry Nord and Leanne Stremcha will be sharing stories of gardening and the gardeners and artists featured in this year’s Northfield Garden Club Tour.
Leanne Stremcha is a jewelry artist and master gardener. Leanne’s website is www.assemblagejewelry.com. She is also one of the founders of the Fine Craft Collective, a co-operative business for artists that hosts a once-a-year seasonal shop in Northfield. Visit www.finecraftcollective.com for more information.
Jerry Nord is a designer and master gardener and barber at Fashionette Concepts at 529 Woodley Street. Last year Jerry’s sculpture art and flower garden was featured on the Northfield Garden Tour. He was the owner of the now closed Hodge-Podge que’ –the antiques and collectibles store in downtown Northfield.
The Northfield Garden Club tour is Saturday, June 25, from 10AM to 4PM and Sunday June 26 from 11AM to 4PM., blending art and nature with six beautiful gardens and seven artists creating and selling their art in these gardens. For more information on the Northfield Garden Tour, call 507-645-2254 or visit sites.google.com/site/northfieldgardenclub
One garden features fourteen gardens with a working windmill; another features Xeriscaping on the boulevard; there is a brand new garden demonstrating a creative use of mulch and landscaping brick; a lovely shade garden features a forty foot water cascade; one lawn is filled with containable trees, walks, and rocks of a great variety; and finally a garden on the edge of five city lots with unique Asian statuary will top the tour off.
The cost of the tour is $10. Tickets, in the form of a small poster marking directions and artists, are available at Knecht’s Landscaping, Eco Gardens, The Measuring Cup, and the Northfield Arts Guild. Tickets are also available at each garden on the days of the tour as well as at the ticket locations.
“Art in Bloom” is in the Northfield Arts Guild Gallery located at 304 Division Street from June 25 through July 2 with an opening reception on Sat. June 25th, 1-3 p. m. Members of the Garden Club will embellish handmade vases (donated by local artists) with their floral designs. In turn, the vases, full of flowers and other natural treasures, will be put up for bid during a silent auction commencing at 10am on Saturday, June 25th and ending at 3pm on Saturday, July 2nd, 2011. All proceeds from this event support the Arts Guild. Artists who have donated glass, ceramic, or copper vases for the event include Kate Fisher, Joey Fleming, Nancy Gallas, Fred Gustafson, Jim Haas, Chuck Halling, Sonja Hillestad, Rose Marie James, Tim Lloyd, Jan McKeachie Johnston, and Juliane Shibata.
