Faribault man in a wheelchair stops on RR tracks

A Union Pacific Railroad engine fatally struck a man in a wheelchair in Faribault.  Faribault Police Chief Don Gudmundson says the man was crossing the tracks at 2nd street when he stopped on the tracks, turned and faced the oncoming engine.  He was killed instantly.  The engineer saw 58 year old Scott Douglas Hutchinson coming down the walk bridge and believed the man had time to cross.  It appears to be a deliberate act by Hutchinson.  An autopsy is being performed and an investigation will continue by Faribault police and Union Pacific.  Video footage within the engine compartment will be reviewed.

Hwy 19 closed Northfield to Stanton

Emergency repairs have closed Hwy 19 between Hwy 3 (just past Carleton) and Hwy 56.  MnDot crews will be replacing a culvert.  The detour includes hwy 3, Dakota county roads 47 and 88 and hwy 56.  MN Dot’s Communications Director, Kristin Kammueller says the project had been planned but due to weather they’ve stepped up the repair work.  She also said that, although
the road is expected to open late Thursday, it depends on the weather.

Public Safety Director warns to watch for more flooding

More rain in the forecast and Public Safety Director Mark Taylor says people need to be safe and on the lookout for flooding.  Sandbag information for homeowners is on our website as well as the City of Northfield.

Council talks funding and Fire

The Northfield City Council has a regular meeting at 7 o’clock tonight.   Representatives from the Save the Depot Committee are expected to request funding from the TIF District #4. They are also making a request for funding from the EDA.   The 2nd reading of the Domestic Partnership Registry will be heard.   The last item on the regular agenda is the approval of a letter to be sent to the Northfield Rural Fire Protection District Board, Township Supervisors and the cities of Dundas and Dennison regarding the formation of a Partnership for Fire Services.  Council is requesting this study group consist of 2 Northfield council members along with 1 rep from Dundas and Dennison and 2 from the Rural Fire Board.  The meeting will be streamed live online at kymnradio.net.
