Kimberly Motzko identified as woman killed yesterday morning

A 48 year old woman struck and killed by a vehicle yesterday morning was identified as Kimberly Motzko of Northfield.  She was walking her dogs along 80th street near Benton Avenue when the van struck her and one of her dogs.  Rice County Sheriff Troy Dunn identified 56 year old Michael Moreland from Northfield as the driver.  Motzko was airlifted to Hennepin County Medical Center where she died in the operating room, according to Sheriff Dunn.  The dog died at the scene.  Moreland and the child passenger in the vehicle were transported to Northfield Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.  No charges have been filed against Moreland at this time. The Rice County Sheriff’s office and the State Patrol will continue to investigate.

A former Northfield man in stable condition after single car crash

A man was airlifted to Hennepin County Medical Center around 5 o’clock last night after crashing into a tree.  30 year old Wiley Schott, formerly of Northfield, was driving eastbound on 90th street in the 9000 block when he swerved to avoid a vehicle turning into their driveway.  He lost control, went into the south ditch, rolled over and struck a tree.  The Rice County Sheriff’s department says Schott is now in stable condition.  The crash remains under investigation.

DEED gets money to help Rice County clean up

Rice, Goodhue and St. Louis are among the Minnesota counties declared eligible for FEMA assistance early in July.  Yesterday afternoon the U.S. Department of Labor awarded a nearly $800,000 National Emergency Grant that will fund temporary jobs to assist with cleanup and recovery efforts following the severe storms that struck between June 14th and the 21st. The funds are being awarded to the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development.

LWV has a small crowd for candidate forum

The League of Women Voters sponsored a candidate forum last night for candidates running in the August 14 primary for Northfield City Council.  Candidates for the contested seats in Ward 2 and At-Large had a chance to address the public.  Not all candidates were available.  The theme of the Ward 2 candidates, Paul Reiland, Frank Balster and Wade Shultz, all seemed to be a desire to unite the community and to build the business community.  Only 2 of the At-large candidates were available, Betsy Buckheit and Joe Gasior.  Gasior commented on communication between councilors and the Mayor while Buckheit was interested in maintaining what the council has started.  Each candidate made a brief statement after the Q and A portion. The event was archived online at kymnradio.net.

Crazy in Northfield

They started cruising Division Street by 7 yesterday morning.  Shoppers were gathering on the street for Northfield’s Crazy Daze and later for the Taste of Northfield.  Many wore purple in honor of Maggie Lee.  Prairies Edge Humane Society reports no cat adoptions but 12 people sponsored cats in honor of Maggie.  The brief but powerful rain hit around 6 last night putting the music on hold for a short while.  Then the show went on!
