3 file  for re-election to Northfield School Board

Filing for Northfield School Board member opened this week.  Four current members terms will end at the end of this year.  Already 3 of those members have filed for re-election.  Noel Stratmoen, Anne Maple and current Chair Ellen Iverson.  Jeff Quinnell’s term ends this year as well.  He is running for district 2 Rice County Commissioner against Galen Malecha.  Affidavits of Candidacy are available in the school district office.  The period for filing affidavits of candidacy closes at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, August 14.  For more information call Donita Delzer in the district office at 507.663.0629 with any questions.

Social Services system will be issue during Election

There’s no question that Rice County has major issues with their social services system.  Between state and federal mandates to provide food support and medical assistance to those eligible to a large contingent of those opposed to raising taxes to the fact that the county is woefully behind in processing applications; Rice County commissioners are caught in a quagmire.  The county’s primary role is to process financial eligibility forms that determine who gets benefits.  State sanctions now threaten a system overwhelmed by the more than 150 percent growth in applications since 2007.  The Faribault Daily News reports that officials met with a group of concerned citizens called People for a Better Rice County yesterday.  After the discussion, everyone was left with a clear impression: The system itself is almost oppressively complex.  Earlier this year, commissioners voted to approve hiring 2 financial eligibility workers, though county staff recommended four to meet growing demand.  You can count on this being a big issue in the election.

EDA approves microgrant to Eclectic Goat

The EDA approved a microgrant for owners of the Eclectic Goat.  In a unanimous vote during a special meeting this morning, members voted to grant $5,000 to Shona Brooks and Suzanne Klumb for working capital to move their business across the street to 413 Division Street.

Northfield Ballroom hosts 2 day blood drive next week

Blood donations across the country are currently at emergency levels.  The American Red Cross and the Northfield Ballroom are teaming up to sponsor a 2 day blood drive August 6th and 7th.  Normally blood donations drop during the summer, however, American Red Cross Manager Sue Gonsior says this year has become critical due to
excessive heat and the rains have been a part of the problem.  She’s encouraging first time donors.  You must weigh at least 110 pounds, be 17 years of age or 16 with parental approval and be in good health.All blood types are needed.  The drive runs from 1pm to 7pm on Monday and Tuesday.  You can call 1-800-red cross, make an online appointment at redcross.org or just show up.

Benefit for Ordalens

On June 14th, winds ripped apart buildings and homes in rural Wanamingo.  The Ordalen (Or DAH lin) family suffered extensive damage to their livelihood and are now wrestling with their insurance company.  A benefit will be held for the Ordalens this Sunday at the Estenson’s Event Center on Ibsen Avenue in Northfield from 2 to 7pm.  There will be live music, a silent auction and other activities.
