The county’s primary role is to process financial eligibility forms that determine who gets benefits. State sanctions now threaten a system overwhelmed by the more than 150 percent growth in applications since 2007. The Faribault Daily News reports that officials met with a group of concerned citizens called People for a Better Rice County yesterday. After the discussion, everyone was left with a clear impression: The system itself is almost oppressively complex. Earlier this year, commissioners voted to approve hiring 2 financial eligibility workers, though county staff recommended four to meet growing demand. You can count on this being a big issue in the election.
