9th Annual Studio ArTour
2013 Studio ArTour of South Central Minnesota
Saturday, 19 October 2013 from 10AM to 6PM
Sunday, 20 October 2013 from 11AM to 5PM
The Studio ArTour is a co-operative venture among a group of artists in Cannon Falls, Northfield and Faribault. Artists open their studios to the public on the third weekend in October each year and invite all to come out and see where and how we work.
This year there are 20 studios featuring 43 artists. The artists will be glad to answer questions and provide information about the art. The range of work is amazing – knitting to welding with glass, and clay and paper in between. Whether you are a long time collector or are just looking for something unique, the studio tour is a perfect way to shop for fine art, and best of all – the tour is free!
Glynnis Lessing (Studio #3) moved to Northfield from Chicago where she taught ceramics for the 24 years at Lill Street and for Art Resources in Teaching. She makes functional high-fired porcelain ware and decorates each pot’s surface using sgraffito with colored slips. Each design is drawn free hand and each piece is unique. Kip O’Krongly (Studio #12) recently moved to Northfield. Her work explores links between agriculture, energy and transportation using multiple layers of imagery on ceramic forms. She creates functional art that wrestles with these issues and she hopes the work compels users to explore how their actions can alter our collective future. The Encore Players present
4th Annual melodrama performance
The Treasure of Shiver River
Saturday, Oct 12 at 7pm and Sunday, Oct 13 at 2pm
Dessert will be served following each performance. Tickets are $15 adults, $5 children. Ticket price includes dessert.
The play will be presented in true melodramatic style, with piano underscoring provided by Theo Wee, and special Oleo music by vocalists Myrna Johnson and Ruth Legvold. The Treasure of Shiver River follows a clever script, peppered with puns (all of the characters’ names are puns: eg., Rusty Nail, Heidi Claire Sanders, Lotta Luck), and amusing antics. There is, of course, a villain in the cast, “Rod Enreel,” played by Jim Haas, who has (at least) three love interests: “Paige Turner,” played by Peggy Sheldon, “Dr. Ophelia Payne,” played by Marie Gery, and “Heidi Claire,” played by Rhoda Van Tassel. The True Hero, “Marshal Marshall Law,” portrayed by Dan Van Tassel, struggles throughout the play to gain the hand of his True Love, Heidi Claire. The villain is also aiming to get Heidi to marry him, so he can have control of the ranch where a treasure is buried. Who will win? Come to find out! Other members of the cast are Ken Lee, Marsha Jacobs, Elizabeth Olson, Doug Kriesel, Sharon Stoeck and Lynne Pederson.
Tickets are on sale at the Senior Center’s Front Desk, by phone (664-3700) or on the Northfield Senior Center website: northfieldseniorcenter.org. *$5 child’s tickets are available through the Front Desk only.
The play is a fundraiser for the Center, and is sponsored by Richard J. Falck of RJF, Inc, Kevin Rodgers, Northfield Insurance Agency, J. Patrick Murtha, Wells Fargo Advisors, Mark Quinnell of State Farm Insurance, and the Northfield Hospital.
