Community News: Video highlights reasons for securing loads

As you travel this Independence Day Holiday weekend (and all summer), be mindful of securing any loads in trailers, boats or on rooftops.  This video dramatically tells the reason why.  It occurred on June 18th, 2016 on I-94.  He was lucky to walk away.

Stats on unsecured loads: For 1/1/16 – 6/15/16 MSP has issued:

  • 122 no/improper load securement citations for passenger vehicles.
  • 802 no/improper load securement warnings for passenger vehicles.
  • 0 no/improper load securement citations for commercial vehicles.
  • 73 no/improper load securement warnings for commercial vehicles.

In the last five years (6/1/11 – 6/2/16), the Minnesota State Patrol has issued:

  • 1,673 unsecured load citations to passenger vehicle drivers.
  • 305 unsecured load citations to commercial vehicle drivers.
  • 9,331 unsecured load warnings to passenger vehicle drivers.
  • 2,032 unsecured load warnings to commercial vehicle drivers.

These stats highlight that being able to stop and swerve well, wearing full protective gear, being able to maintain at least a two second following distance, and using good judgement when encountering these vehicles are essential for motorcyclists.
