Don’t get burned – get a permit!; Council approves Tanzenwald brewing licenses – discusses Sunday liquor sales; Got a project? Get to the Home & Garden Show

Spring and warmer temperatures brings a burst of energy and that means spring cleaning which can lead to burning.  Rice County Sheriff Troy Dunn says you need a permit.  Go to your local townships or fire department for a form and then it’s all phone activated through the DNR so when you call the number, you’ll get a number and it’ll put you on a map.  [ LINK to MN DNR with information on burning permits]   Dunn said, “so if we get a call of a suspicious burn or a possible structure fire we can look at the map and see if there’s a controlled burn in the area and let certain areas know “.  He added that they will always

respond to report of a structure fire.  The Sheriff’s department gets plenty of calls of unknown fires.  Of the 4 fires last weekend, two did not have permits.  Make sure you’re not burning illegal items such as anything petroleum based.  It’s $150 fine if you don’t have a permit, the burning permit itself costs nothing!  Recreational fires don’t need permits but you are required to attend to it.  Those are defined as 3 ft x 3 ft fires inside a fire ring in your yard away from any structure.

Council approves Tanzenwald brewing licenses – discusses Sunday liquor sales

Tanzenwald Brewing Company will be ready to open with all systems go as the Northfield Council approved all licenses required.  Mayor Pownell commented that the Council’s excited to see the business off and running and mentioned being able to see the brewery equipment as you drove by on Hwy 3.  Steve and Jenaveve Pittman plan to hold their Grand Opening on April 20th.  Council also discussed Sunday liquor sales.  The legislature approved Sunday sales from 11am to 6pm starting July 1st.  With only municipal sales in the City of Northfield, the council must choose whether to amend the City’s Ordinance to open the store on Sundays. Liquor Store manager Steve Delong said he’s really not sure whether opening the store on Sundays would generate more money or lose some with having to staff it.  However, it’s really about customer service, especially as new competition comes to the area with MGM slated to open in Dundas and Firehouse Liquor already there!  Council all seemed in favor of Sunday sales and to let Manager Delong and Administrator Martig make the decision on hours.  Delong will be polling customers at the Muni.

Got a project?  Get to the Home & Garden Show
