Fire at Truckers Inn takes out 3 semi-trailors; The Convenings; Farmington seeks input; Stencil drains for the Cannon

Faribault Fire Chief Dustin Dienst reports an early morning fire at parking lot of Trucker’s Inn on Lyndale Avenue.   Faribault Fire Department, Faribault Police Department and North Memorial Ambulance responded.    Upon our arrival, smoke and flames were coming from the engine compartment area of a semi-tractor trailer.  In addition to the original 911 call, there were two other semi-tractors on either side of it both on fire.  Two of them were

unoccupied; the occupant of the third was awakened by a fellow semi-tractor driver and escaped the fire.  No drivers or firefighters were injured during this incident.  All three semi-tractors are a total loss.  The trailers and their contents were not impacted by the fire.  Chief Dienst commented, “No one was injured thanks to the quick actions of drivers at the scene.  The Faribault Police Department secured the scene, which assisted Faribault Fire Department personnel in keeping the fire contained to only three semi-tractors”.

The Convenings

Nobody REALLY wants to talk about dying, but sooner or later it’s going to happen. Northfield will host an event called The Convenings in collaboration with Honoring Choices Minnesota, a statewide initiative to urge people to fill out a Health Care Directive.  The Convenings are a series of public presentations throughout the state of Minnesota, based on the book We Know How This Ends by Bruce Kramer and Cathy Wurzer.  Kramer was diagnosed with ALS and he and Wurzer wrote the book to share insight after they had many on-air conversations.  Northfield Hospital & Clinics Director of Social Services, Susan Lohmann said of the event that it’s designed to help people think more about it and learn more about it.  Lohmann said it’s very difficult when families are left wondering what their loved one wants in the event that they leave no direction.  The Convenings will be held at St. Dominic’s Catholic Church at 6:30 tomorrow evening.  Wurzer will emcee and interview people with their own stories.  There  will be music by the Lime Stones, Daniel Grohl and Occasional Jazz.  They were chosen for a reason, you’ll find out if you attend.  Information on local resources will be available from the Northfield Advanced Care Planning Advisory group.  The event is free and open to the public.  Organizers look at this as a first step for the community.

Farmington seeks input

Farmington residents are urged to vote between two park and plaza concepts on the City of Farmington’s website.  Ci.farmington.mn.us.  There are also 6 related questions about future downtown redevelopment.  You can vote up until May 17th.  The development is years in the making and funding has not yet been identified.

Stencil drains for the Cannon

The Cannon River Watershed Partnership is inviting the community to stencil next to storm drains.  Gather a group of neighbors, family, friends or community members to paint “No Dumping Drains to Cannon” in your neighborhood in either Northfield or Faribault, call the CRWP or e-mail Kristi at kristi@crwp.net.  to set up a supply hand-off.  They’ll also teach you the technique to easily and safely spread the word that our drains go directly to the Cannon river.
