Faribault Fire responds to 2 fires

Rice County emergency responders were kept busy all weekend. Faribault Fire fought 2 fires.  On Friday a brush pile fire ignited a nearby historic cabin, while it was a loss, there were no injuries.  Saturday morning they were sent to a house fire in which a bundle of cords and wires running along the baseboard in a bedroom caused the fire.  Again no one was hurt but the home is uninhabitable right now.  HistoricCabinFireMediaRelease.doc    HouseFireat6288thSt.NWMediaRelease.doc

Alcohol likely involved in serious injury crash – one in critical condition

A very serious injury accident was reported by the Sheriff’s department on Saturday morning.  Deputies responded to a rollover at 2:30 Saturday morning at 11000 Kane Trail in Northfield Township. Sheriff Dunn said the 22 year old driver, Kaleb Meyers, of Hastings had to be extricated. The front seat passenger, 19 year old Dustin McElmury Schultz, of Hampton was taken with Meyers to Regions Hospital by ground ambulance. The third occupant, 20 year old Derek Gallegos Staley, of Cannon Falls was ejected and found unconscious in a field. He was airlifted to HCMC.  Christine Hill with HCMC confirmed just before noon, that Staley is in critical condition at this time.  The 2014 Ford Focus had been n/b on Lamb Avenue and entering curve onto Kane Trail went into the ditch and rolled over several times. The MN State Patrol reconstructed the scene. Alcohol was believed to be a factor.  The crash remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office and State Patrol.  MediaRelease-PICrash060317.doc  T

309 students graduate from NHS on Sunday

Just about 15 minutes before Northfield High School graduation ceremonies were set to begin, there was panic as the sprinkler system suddenly went off! People were already gathering and a few got wet.  Principal Joel Leer joked, “the graduates of course, won’t know what I’m talking about, but I turned to our Head Custodian about an hour and a half ago and said it’s gonna be hot out there, make sure we have plenty of water”!  He commented on the reputation of Northfield High School and the students efforts, “the results of national assessments in which you participated continue to demonstrate that Northfield graduates are some of the best prepared graduates in the State and region.  The test results you posted are the reasons that teams of educators from schools far and wide come to Northfield High School to figure out what we are doing to get you to perform in the way you do”.  In total 309 students graduated.  78 of them with the highest honor of a grade point average of 3.7 or more.  Another 91 were honor students with a 3.5 grade point average.  The commencement address was by Science teacher Daniel Taylor and Tia Pitsavas and Nicky Vazquez gave the student addresses.  All in all the ceremony lasted about an hour.  It is posted on kymn.net.
