Task force busts couple dealing near Faribo police station; Council approves new Nfld Finance Director; Two Nfld entrepreneurs launch curbside compost; Roads open in Dundas and Chapel Brewing gets equipment delivery

A Faribault couple living just a couple of blocks from the Police Station were busted for dealing cocaine out of their apartment.  According to the criminal complaints, between March 16th and 27th, an informant worked with the Cannon River Drug and Violent Offender Task Force to purchase cocaine from 37 year old Donnie Dwayne Antonio Jones.  He sold the informant nearly 24 grams of coke over several visits.  On occasion there were children in the home during the drug buys.  A search warrant was executed on June 2nd.  At the time, agents smelled burnt marijuana in the apartment.  Agents found digital scales with

residue cash and marijuana.  All 3 children were home.  Jones is charged with 1st degree sale, 3rd degree drug possession and child endangerment.  The most serious charge carries a maximum 25 year prison term.  His wife,  31 year old Jessica Faye Higgs-Jones, is charged with 5th degree drug possession and child endangerment, each carries up to a year.  Their court appearances are June 20th and 21st. Council approves new Nfld Finance Director

Northfield’s new Finance Director was formally approved by the Council.  Brenda Angelstad has extensive experience in corporate and non-profits.  She’s an Ole and holds a Masters in Business Administration.  What she doesn’t have is a background in City government.  Administrator Ben Martig commented, “there are some nuances to the public sector.  There is no question there is a transition into that world of public accounting that’s a little bit different but we’re excited about the opportunity to work with her and really think that it’s going to be a nice fit.  She’s got some great communication skills”.  Angelstad starts next week.

Two Nfld entrepreneurs launch curbside compost

Two Northfield entrepreneurs got the go-ahead to begin their organic wet-waste refuse pick up.  They needed a license to transport refuse in the City.  Helen Forsythe and Cliff Martin have launched Northfield Composting…Martin said, “we think that curbside composting is an excellent solution to get residential composting all across the City.  We hope to bring that opportunity to Northfield through this program.  So specifically a couple unique things about what we want to bring with this version of this is a business incorporated as a cooperative”.  Initially the waste will go to the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux composting site.  But their goal is to gain enough subscribers to compost closer to Northfield and return the finished compost to the residents. Dick’s Sanitation has a wet-waste receptacle located at the City compost site on Armstrong Rd. Councilor Zweifel had concerns, “of Dick’s Composting versus this company’s composting.  But I’m interested in that question, I’m interested in how it effects the big picture and ultimately getting to city-wide composting because that’s my ultimate goal.  And I don’t right now know if this is the best path forward for that but also don’t know if it’s like our other licenses, like a tobacco license, if I get to … if I have the opportunity to say no at this point.  Yes or no.   I mean is it they’re meeting the requirments”.   C. DeLong said, “I don’t think Northfield’s ready to be forced to participate in curbside composting.  I think this is an excellent alternative, a grass-roots  approach to building the business”.  Curbside Composting will begin July 11th.  It’s $6.50 a month to compost items including those you cannot put in your home compost.  For complete information on the what and hows, and to sign up, go to their website northfieldcompost.com.
