German activist, writer, and community organizer Christopher Vogel will present a lecture entitled, “Think Three-Sided: Soccer, Politics, and Global Change,” on Friday, April 27 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the Carleton College Gould Library Athenaeum. The engaging lecture focuses on sports and politics in our ever-changing global society. Vogel will also explain the rules of play for Three-Sided Soccer. The following day, the Carleton German department will host a three-sided soccer tournament on April 28 as a follow-up to Vogel’s presentation
“Three-Sided Soccer” (or Three-Sided Football) is a variation on the game of soccer where three teams play together on a hexagonal pitch. The rules are similar to normal football (soccer), but it is the team that concedes the fewest goals, rather than scores the most, that wins.
Invented by Danish Situationist philosopher and artist Asger Jorn in the 1960s, the complex and curious game has recently gained in international reputation as a progressive critique of the divisive and binary elements in sport (us vs. them, you vs. me, good vs. bad). In his lively lecture, Vogel will introduce audiences to this new sport and its socio-political ramifications.
Described as a combination of soccer, chess, and poker, Vogel will lead a three-sided soccer tournament the following day on Saturday, April 28. To register a team or receive further information, email jsimon@carleton.edu.
