The Northfield Arts Guild presents The Pirates of Penzance

Northfield Arts Guild Theater presents The Pirates of Penzance, a comic operetta by Gilbert and Sullivan, the weekends of July 21 through August 6, 2017. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm and Sundays at 2:00 pm. The show plays at Arcadia Charter School’s theater, located at 1719 Cannon Road, Northfield.

When I think of pirates, phrases like ‘scamps of the sea’ or ‘nautical ne’er-do-wells’ jump into my head. I picture a band of unkempt, somewhat smelly fellows, with more brawn than brains, built for action,” explains director Bob Gregory-Bjorklund. “When W.S Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan wrote The Pirates of Penzance in 1879, it seems they pictured pirates, and the young maidens they “courted”, as just a bit more proper than that, with stellar voices pretty much made for the opera stage. And what beautiful music G&S created for those voices!”

Joining director Bob Gregory-Bjorklund is Music Director Daniel Kallman, Choreographer Shari Setchell and Pianist J.P. Douglas. The cast features Eric Parrish as the Pirate King, Elijah Leer as Frederic, Steve Lawler as the Major General, Bryan Reed as Samuel, Samantha Noonan as Ruth, Hannah Johnson as Mabel, Kat Middeldorp as Edith, Birch Carlson as Kate, Elin Odegaard as Isabel, and Ben Wang as Sergeant. Additionally, the Daughters are played by Mariela Krenzel, Courtney Mastin; the Pirates are Dave Flynn, Eli Warren, Todd Carlson, Amy Haslett-Marroquin, Dick Brown, Sam Wilmont; and the Cops are Maclean Braun, Halvor Bratland, Hannah Mahr, and Wendy Placko.

How do we combine the rough-hewn with the refined, the sublime with the ridiculous?” asks Gregory-Bjorklund. “That’s our challenge as we create our version of The Pirates of Penzance. To that end, we’re combining a stellar cast of singer/actors and a nine piece orchestra with unconventional staging and very active choreography to bring you an aurally and visually stimulating evening of entertainment for all ages and theatrical tastes.”

An opening night reception for The Pirates of Penzance will be held for the Friday, July 21st performance. Following the Sunday, July 23rd performance will be a post-show discussion, and the Sunday, August 6th performance will be American Sign Language interpreted.
