A 5 judge panel came out with their Redistricting maps yesterday afternoon. The interactive map is up on our website kymnradio.net.  Northfield is now in senate district 20 and 20b for the rice county portion and Senate District 58 and 58b for Dakota County. Sen. Al DeKruif’s district has now changed dramatically, he will now be in District 23. His opponent is now Republican Julie Rosen.  DeKruif has not declared his candidacy yet but believes he has more to do. He’ll talk with his family and see where to go from there.

Wards may be a thing of the past

The city council and redistricting subcommittee continue to work on the Ward boundaries. The maps must be complete by March 20^th. Staff will finish gathering all the public input and come back to the council at their March 6^th meeting. In the meantime there was the suggestion by Patrick Ganey to eliminate Wards completely. Mayor Rossing is in favor of letting go of the divisions. This item will come back at a later date, it could go on the November ballot.

Northfield Depot gains ground

The Save the Northfield Depot group proposed a plan to get things moving, literally. Should the city council approve the plan at their March 6^th meeting, the Save the Depot group would pay a dollar for the nearly one acre of land known as the Q-block, where the Quarterback Club sits and then move the building to that location. It won’t be easy, Save the Northfield Depot must raise nearly $300,000 to complete the first phase of its plan that includes moving the 1888 building and converting it into a community center or possibly a transit hub. There were 4 issues that concerned council. They want to make sure that should the Depot group abandon the project for any reason, the city could buy the property back at a dollar. The security amount normally asked for is 125% of the phase one cost but because Save the Depot is non-profit they’ll ask 100% only. They also want to make sure that it’s clearly stated they will not pay for a second EAW or any consequent clean-up. Finally Rossing said they want the project to move along so gave the Depot group a deadline to come back to council March 6^th.

Malt-o-Meal now MOM Brands

The iconic Malt-o-Meal has changed it’s name to MOM brands. The company founded in 1919, was a one-product company, today they rank among the nation’s leading cereal companies with 10 different kinds and felt the name change would reflect the growth of the company. Employees will not be negatively affected by the change.

A man was airlifted to a Metro hospital after crashing into 2 vehicles yesterday afternoon near Malt-o-Meal. The crash occurred at 5^th and Orchard around 1pm. Deputy Police Chief Chuck Walerius said the driver likely blacked out due to an unknown medical issue, causing the wreck. His truck spun and picked up some rocks before crashing into an SUV parked in one of the Malt-O-Meal lots.  Another vehicle, sitting on the shoulder of 5^th St. west was also damaged.

 City Council meets at 7

The Northfield City Council will meet in a closed session at 6 o’clock tonight to discuss labor negotiations. Their regular meeting is scheduled to follow at 7 and will be streamed live online at kymnradio.net. There are nine items on the consent agenda including approval of the TIGER grant RFP and the 2^nd reading of the Flood Plain ordinance, which must be adopted by April 3^rd.  A second reading of the amendment to the Tobacco ordinance is also up for approval as well. The ordinance changes some definitions as well as clearly making it illegal to allow smoking inside a tobacco shop for the purpose of “sampling”. The final effective date is March 26^th .

Redistricting public hearing

A 5 judge panel will introduce their redistricting maps for Legislative and congressional district boundaries today at 1 o’clock. They will then go to the Governor for approval. In the last 5 decades, the Governor has only approved the maps from the judicial panel once. It will likely be vetoed by Dayton. District 25B which currently includes Northfield extends from Northfield to Belle Plaine. Due to population changes Representative Kelby Woodard says there will be changes.  Woodard says none of the maps drawn up by the Republicans, Democrats or Draw the Line Minnesota include Northfield in 25B. You’ll have a chance to say your piece about Northfield’s wards at the Public Hearing scheduled during tonight’s Northfield’s City council meeting. Staff will summarize the public comments for the March 6 Council meeting. The maps and comment sheets have been posted at City Hall, at the Library, and on the City’ s website.

 2012 Street reconstruction assessments

Finance Director Kathleen McBride will present information on the 2012 street reconstruction assessments during tonights council meeting. The individual assessments range from a low of $270 to a high of $7,920 for single family residential. For multifamily residential the ranges are from $ 6, 600 to $ 32,400. Commercial and industrial ranges are from a low of $1, 500 to a high of $20, 700. Council is expected to declare the cost of assessments and to set a time for the assessment hearing. You can log onto the city’s website, click on city council and then click on the council meeting packet addendum for more details. Council will also be presented with a Depot Update. The Save the Northfield Depot group is proposing to buy the building and move it.

An electric frying pan is to blame for a housefire Sunday morning. Northfield Fire was called to 504 4^th St. E. just before 10 yesterday morning. The fire started in the kitchen but due to the age of the home, it spread quickly to all levels including the attic, Fire Chief Gerry Franek called in Randolph fire to assist. It was necessary to cut vent holes in the roof and also into the soffits and siding to access the fire. Firefighters had the blaze under control around 11:30 and left the scene at about 1pm. According to Rice County tax records the single family home is owned by Lisa Ebert. Deputy Chief Chuck Walerius said the woman told police she left her home around 9 Sunday morning and had used the electric frying pan to make breakfast, Franek believes it was not shut off. The home, built in 1900, is uninhabitable but firefighters were able to save many of the owner’s belongings.

Redistricting maps for the state will come out tomorrow. A non-partisan group has been working to help draw the maps but a 5 judge panel will ultimately announce their proposal at 1 o’clock tomorrow. In the last 5 decades, the Governor has only approved the maps from the judicial panel once. It will likely be vetoed by Dayton.  District 25b extends from Northfield to the Belle Plaine area. Due to population changes Woodard says there will be changes.  Plans put forth by the Republicans, the Democrats or Draw the Line Minnesota include Northfield in District 25B, however, Woodard says the 5 judge panel will likely include the city.  You’ll have a chance to say your piece about Northfield’s wards at the Public Hearing scheduled for tomorrow night during Northfield’s City council meeting.

 Creating a 2 year school calendar to give parents lead time on vacations

The school calendar was a topic of discussion at the School board meeting. Superintendent Richardson says they’re proposing something a little different this year by creating a 2 year calendar. Richardson says that folks have expressed their desire for a spring break that coincides with St. Olaf and Carleton. The area of largest discussion has been when New Years day is in the middle of the week. Do you come back for a day or two or take the whole week off. Richardson says there’s a lot of disagreement. The board wants the community to hear from the community and will discuss it further at their Feb. 27^th meeting. If the whole week is taken off, the days would be made up at the end of the school year.

School year around?

Another part of that discussion centered around creating a year round calendar. This doesn’t mean no breaks for kids, Richardson says instead of 13 full weeks off during the summer, which can adversely affect some students, school would operate year around with stretches of 15 to 20 days off at a time scattered throughout the year. There are lots of issues including trying to match up with co-curricular activities. The current calendar was created in the late 1700′s so that children could help harvest crops.

St. Olaf pastor named Minnesota’s first female bishop

An interim college pastor at St. Olaf will become Minnesota’s first female bishop. Ann Svennungsen, has been elected the new bishop of the Minneapolis Area Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. 700 members voted on Saturday to install Svennungsen to the position saying they wanted to send a message of tolerance. It also follows a decision from church leaders Friday to oppose a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage in Minnesota.

It’s Presidents Day and the Northfield Library is closed as are all government offices and most banks.

An electric frying pan is blamed for a housefire earlier this morning. Northfield Fire was called to 504 4^th St. E. just before 10am. She had used the electric frying pan. Due to the age of the home, the fire spread quickly to all levels, Fire Chief Gerry Franek called in Randolph fire to assist. A Dundas man is arrested for assaulting his daughter. 44 year old Robert Anthony Anderson allegedly strangled his daughter after she brought a friend home with her. Anderson was intoxicated and angry, throwing the girl into a chair and then pinning her against a wall and choking her. The girls mother pulled her father off of her. Anderson left the house on foot. Anderson claims he was upset with his daugher about some personal information he discovered. He said SHE attacked him. Accounts from the friend align with the mother and daughter statements. Anderson is charged with a felony and 2 misdemeanors. If convicted of all charges, he faces up to 3 ½ years in prison and or $7,000 in fines.

Beaumaster says synthetic drugs are here

Synthetic drugs are a growing concern in Minnesota. Just this week, Senator Klobuchar urged the passage of a bipartisan package of bills that would ban dangerous synthetic drugs. Rice County Attorney Paul Beaumaster says this is an area where law enforcement is always playing catch-up. He hopes this bill will provide for a broader definition allowing for more prosecution. Beaumaster just prosecuted his first case this week for possession of synthetic marijauna. The man did not buy the drug over the internet bought but found it locally.

Has the USPS fulfilled their obligation to the downtown Post Office?

The price tag listed for the downtown post office is $845,000. The city’s Michele Merxbauer told council this week that, technically, the USPS isn’t allowed to put the building on the market until a 106 process has been complete. That has to do with the Heritage Preservation Act of 1966 which requires federal agencies to evaluate the impact of all federally funded or permitted projects on historic properties. If a negative impact is found then they must work with officials to come up with a workable solution. The USPS feels they’ve done that by sending a letter. The Minnesota postal service’s Mary Anne Heideman disagrees with the USPS but at this point has no way of halting the process. SOPO, the Save our Post office group, is still working on some alternative including buying the building for a fraction of the price and allowing the post office to run their retail operation there rent-free. At this point, Mayor Rossing says the main focus is to put the building in friendly hands to maintain the historic value. Between the property market and the government, the process is sure to move slowly.

Celebrate downtown Northfield!

The NDDC invites you to their annual partnership celebration tonight at the Grand. The party starts at 7 o’clock. The event features two local bands, the New Moon Trio and Area 51. There will also be hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar and a raffle. The raffle will be for a cash prize of $500 (need to be present to win).
