Northfield Hospital is one of the best places in Minnesota to have a baby, according to the Women’s Choice Award, which rates healthcare organizations based on patient satisfaction and clinical excellence.
Northfield Hospital is one of 17 Minnesota hospitals to earn the award, and one of just five small hospitals (fewer than 100 beds) honored statewide.
The Women’s Choice Award is based on patient recommendations collected by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The award is given to hospitals that rank above the national average for patient recommendations. Other factors include above-average rankings for patient safety, and low rates of early elective deliveries. (Northfield Hospital has a policy against early elective deliveries, for best baby health.)
“It’s gratifying that this honor is based on what patients themselves have to say about their experience here,” said Steve Underdahl, president and CEO of Northfield Hospital & Clinics. “We’re proud that women – and their families – feel so comfortable and well-cared for in our Birth Center.”
The Birth Center at Northfield Hospital delivers over 500 babies a year in a nurturing, family-friendly environment that offers attentive, individualized care.
Birth Center features include:
- Large private birthing rooms with whirlpool tubs, birthing balls, and scenic views
- Mom/Partner/Baby rooming together
- State-of-the-art infant security with mom/baby electronic identification system
- Epidural as well as natural childbirth support (plus nitrous oxide, new in 2016)
- Movement encouraged during labor, with intermittent or telemetry fetal monitoring
- Cesarean birth and recovery with care partner at mom’s side and baby skin-to-skin
- Breastfeeding consultation and coaching
- Childbirth education classes, including Baby Basics and Breastfeeding
- Birth planning and pre-registration
“New moms have many choices when it comes to having their baby, so choosing the best birthing experience is right up there with choosing the best doctor,” said Delia Passi, CEO and Founder of the Women’s Choice Award, in a release. “We’ve made it easy for moms to vet out the hospitals that are proven to deliver an outstanding experience.”
The Women’s Choice Award uses data reported by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in its Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) surveys.
