Fire In a roof top heating/cooling unit.
On Thursday September 26, 2019, at 2:04 am the Faribault Fire Department, Faribault Police Department, Rice County Sheriff’s Office and North Memorial Ambulance responded to a report of flames on the roof of the Rice County Government Center. An on-duty Faribault Police Officer reported the fire. Upon arrival, the Fire Department verified that the flames were coming from a rooftop heating and cooling unit (RTU) located over the new addition on the east side of the building. The building was unoccupied at the time of the fire and no one was injured. The fire was contained to the RTU and the structure sustained no damage.
Fire crews accessed the roof with a ladder and extinguished the flames with an ABC fire extinguisher and by shutting down the gas to the unit. Fans were utilized to remove the smoke that had entered the building via the ductwork. Firefighters cleared the scene at 3:30 am. A Rice County employee and representative from MetCon Construction were also on scene.
Officials were on scene investigating to determine the cause of the fire. Foul play is not suspected and the amount of damage in the area of fire origin will make it difficult to know exactly how the fire started.
Fire Chief Dustin Dienst commented, “Even though this was a relatively small fire, the smoke that entered the building will be very disruptive to the normal activities at this busy facility.”
