Benedictine Living Community of Northfield Offers Events on Aging Well

Free and open to the public, events focus on longevity and caring for parent

This summer, Benedictine Living Community of Northfield presents two educational events on aging well. “Blue Zones: Secrets of a Long Life” on June 24 will discuss lifestyle trends that contribute to longevity. “Parenting Your Parents” on July 16 will provide practical advice on caring for aging parents.

The events are free and open to the public, but space is limited. Call (507) 512-5720 for reservations.

“Blue Zones: Secrets of a Long Life”, June 24, 4:30 p.m., FiftyNorth, 1651 Jefferson Pkwy, Northfield

What should you be doing to live a longer life? Danny Buettner debunks the most common myths and offers a science-backed blueprint for average Americans to add 12 quality years to their lives. Based on the “Blue Zone” study – in-depth research of communities worldwide whose elders live with vim and vigor at record-setting ages – Buettner will share the nine common diet and lifestyle habits that have kept individuals spry past age 100.

“Parenting Your Parents”, July 16, 5:30 p.m., Viking Theater at St. Olaf Campus, Buntrock Commons, 1520 St Olaf Avenue, Northfield

Author, actor and experienced son Jim Comer will provide practical tips on having difficult family conversations, maintaining patience through the process, navigating challenging relationships and planning for everyone’s wellbeing, parents and children alike. In 1996, Comer’s life took a sudden detour when he quit his job and moved back to Texas, after 30 years away, to care for his parents. This life-changing choice led Comer to a rediscovery of family values and the writing of “When Roles Reverse: A Guide to Parenting Your Parents.”
