Everyone is invited to the Cannon Valley Trail on Saturday, June 1 for National Trails Day!  Held annually on the first Saturday of June, National Trails Day encourages the public to engage with their local trail through recreational opportunities or through community service to clean-up projects.  For the first time, the Cannon Valley Trail is offering free wheel passes to enjoy a day on the trail.  Residents and visitors are encouraged to enjoy the trail with friends and family from Cannon Falls to Red Wing!

As part of the open house, come to the Welch Access Station, located at 26674 144th Avenue Way in Welch, to see the #OnlyinMN Monument!  The 40 foot long monument offers a great opportunity for photos as well as celebrating tourism in Minnesota.  It will be available for viewing from June 1 through June 21.  After taking your photo, enjoy some pie samples from Stockholm Pie’s Pie Plate Café & Coffee.

The Cannon Valley Trail will also be hosting a photo contest via Facebook and Instagram for National Trails Day!  Take a picture along the trail with others or of the spectacular scenery and then upload it to Facebook or Instagram with the hashtags, #cannonvalleytrail and #nationaltrailsday on June 1 to be entered into the contest.  The winning entry will receive a Sturdiwheat gift basket, courtesy of the Cannon Valley Trail, and could be used in future promotional efforts.

Remember that while you are enjoying the trail, follow proper trail etiquette:

  • Watch for and obey all signs
  • Look both ways at road crossings
  • Be in control of your bicycle at all times
  • Watch for hazards on or near the trail
  • Use the right hand side of the trail
  • Announce your presence when passing
  • Wear a helmet.  They are not required but encouraged
  • No pets are allowed on the trail
