The Carleton College Chinese Music Ensemble will perform in concert on Sunday, Feb. 24, from 3-4:15 p.m. in the Kracum Performance Hall of the Weitz Center for Creativity. The program, which also will include appearances by the Global Music Ensemble and the Tang Song Early Music Ensemble, will feature selections of Chinese classical, folk, percussion, minority and contemporary music, as well as music from Norwegian, Italian, Japanese and German traditions.

The concert will feature the premiere performance of a multimedia project, “Chinese Nanyin,” the result of a 2018 ASIANetwork Student-Faculty Fellowship. Under the mentorship of renowned pipa artist and ensemble director Gao Hong, selected fellows Gus Holley ’19 (Moorhead, Minn.), Skyler Yu ’21 (China) and Lia Spencer ’18 spent the summer of 2018 in China, documenting the people of the Quanzhou region that are working to preserve and share the cultural and musical traditions of the living and semi-orally transmitted  nanyin art form.

By documenting and sharing the struggles and successes that nanyin performers have encountered in the preservation process, the ASIANetwork Student Fellows hoped to raise awareness of nanyin as a model for other declining musical traditions throughout Asia and the rest of the world.

Carleton’s Chinese Music Ensemble has performed at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Mall of America, the University of Minnesota, and at numerous conferences and Chinese celebrations throughout the region and beyond.

Ensemble director Gao Hong is a world-renowned Chinese pipa player and composer, who graduated from the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing where she studied with pipa master Lin Shicheng. She has received numerous commissions and has performed countless U.S. and world premieres of pipa concerti with organizations including the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Heidelberg Philharmonic, the Buenos Aires Philharmonic and many others. She is also guest professor at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing.

This event is free and open to the public, and is sponsored by the Carleton College Department of Music. For more information, including disability accommodations, call (507) 222-4475. The Weitz Center for Creativity is located on Third and College Streets in Northfield.
