Twelve years ago, author Wendy Swallow set out to answer the question of what happened to Nora Helmer, the heroine of Henrik Ibsen’s play A Doll’s House after this loving wife and mother walks out on her difficult marriage at the end of Ibsen’s play with a defiant slam of the door. Nora has no plan and scarcely any money –her purpose is flight. The audience is left to ponder what will become of her.
The novel, Searching for Nora: After the Doll’s House, follows Nora as she first struggles to make a life for herself in Kristiania (now Oslo) and then escapes Norway in disguise, a passenger on an emigrant ship and soon a reluctant settler in the harsh Minnesota prairie.
On Sunday, Nov. 10th at 1:30, Ms. Swallow will visit the Northfield Public Library to talk about her search for
Nora – on the streets and in the parlors of Oslo and Bergen, in the grasslands of Western Minnesota and in the
written words of Henrik Ibsen and Norwegian immigrants to America.
Copies of the novel will be available for purchase.
