  By Teri Knight, News Director An investigation begun last year by the Cannon River Drug and Violent Offender Task Force (CRDVTF) led to a major bust in September of 2018. Yesterday, United States Attorney Erica MacDonald announced the guilty plea of one of four individuals involved. 34-year-old Fernando Ramos-Meza pled guilty to conspiring to distribute approximately 191 pounds of methamphetamine. Patiently following leads for months, law enforcement officers of the CRDVTF executed a search warrant on September 11, 2018, at Ramo-Meza’s residence in north Minneapolis. In April of last year, two people were charged in the death of a 3-year-old boy in foster care. Yesterday afternoon, 28-year-old Charles Homich pled guilty to second-degree murder in the death of 3-year-old Zayden Lawson, a foster child in the care of his girlfriend Zeporia Fortenberry, in June of 2017. Sentencing is set for August 13, 2019, at 9 a.m. in Hastings. On the afternoon of June 7, 2017, Eagan police officers and paramedics were dispatched to a townhome on a report that a 3-year-old male was not breathing. There’s been a lot of change in the banking industry over the past 11 years while Tim Viere has been the President of the First National Bank of Northfield. He said, “The model that we’re under is making loans and bringing in deposits but we don’t have a lot of other sources of income like trusts, wealth management, leasing, insurance, those types of things.” Technology is changing faster than ever before, which means increased costs that many community banks are not able to keep up with. These are a couple of the factors that initiated the sale of First National Bank to Merchants Bank. First National Bank of Northfield is being sold. According to President and CEO Dave Shumway, Merchants Bank will acquire the local bank by the end of 2019. A Faribault man is in jail charged with 1st degree drug sale. On Wednesday, agents of the Cannon River Drug Task Force obtained a search warrant of the home and vehicle of 30 year old Victor Manuel Moreno. They first followed him from his home in the 500 block of 3rd st. nw to a business parking lot in Eagan where they observed, what they thought, was a drug transaction. He was stopped by a Rice County Sheriff’s K-9 Deputy in a gas station parking lot where the vehicle was searched.  Agents then searched his home. (more…)
