(1/16/2018)—University of Minnesota Extension, KDHL Radio, and KRFO Radio are hosting the annual Rice and Steele County Crops Day on Tuesday, February 27 from 8:30 am until 2:30 pm. Crop producers and Ag stakeholders in Rice and Steele counties are invited to attend the event in Faribault at the Rice County 4-H Building at 1900 Fairgrounds Drive.

The morning portion will start at 8:30 am featuring a strategic farming workshop entitled Growing Soybeans That Out-Compete Weeds, presented by University of Minnesota Extension Crops Educators Lisa Behnken and Ryan Miller. The morning session will provide up-to-date strategies to address current challenges in soybean production. Topics include:

  • Impacts of row spacing, plant population, early canopy closure, and pest pressure on soybean competitiveness
  • Weed biology and how to use it to our advantage
  • Strategies for getting off the resistance treadmill

In the afternoon, Dean Malvick, UMN Plant Pathology Extension Specialist, will discuss soybean diseases along with results from his 2017 fungicide trials. The event will wrap up with a commodity market outlook with Gordon Kralovetz of Chiodo Commodities, Inc.

There is no fee to attend this event thanks to sponsorship from the Minnesota Soybean Research and Promotion Council. Pre-registration is not necessary, but is appreciated for a meal count. Please contact Claire LaCanne, Extension Educator for Rice and Steele counties at 507.332.6165.
