Sales tax/street projects and roundabout on Nfld Council agenda; Rice-Steele 911 Center was down for several hours; Nfld Shares receives national accreditation; City of Nfld seeks election judges

By Teri Knight, News Director

The Northfield Council meets tomorrow night with some important items on the agenda including a vote on asking the legislature to place a local sales tax option on the November ballot and considering plans and specs for the 2020 street project with bid opening proposed for February 20th. There have been numerous iterations involving bike lanes, cycle tracks and parking. The details are on the city’s website

under this agenda item. Bump outs are proposed at 7th and Water and at 1st and Winona and 1st and Nevada Streets. Approval for the roundabout design at Hwy 246 and Jefferson Pkwy is also on the agenda. They want to get that bidding out by February 27th. Staff is proposing to close the intersection in early May to complete the project by the middle of October. This project increased by $1.4 million to an estimated $4.7 million due to the need to raise the underpasses for flooding events. Citizens can comment online on any of the items on the regular agenda through noon tomorrow.

Rice-Steele 911 Center was down for several hours

The Rice and Steele 911 center is back up and running after an outage last night from about 10 o’clock until near 3 o’clock this morning. KYMN spoke with the Center this morning and they noted that the second alert saying they were back online didn’t reach everyone. They are working to find out why.

Nfld Shares receives national accreditation

Northfield Shares recently received accreditation with the nation’s highest standard for philanthropic excellence. National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations® establish legal, ethical, effective practices for community foundations. Board Chair Mary Lynn Oglesbee said, “This is critically important to our donors. When people make a charitable bequest or establish a fund, they are putting their trust in us. They are counting on us to manage the investment wisely, honor their charitable wishes and, in some cases, provide lifetime income to a loved one. The National Standards accreditation says our house is in order.” Northfield Shares works to meet critical community needs and support local causes, including education, supporting the arts, cultivating gardens, feeding families, homelessness, youth engagement and health.
