Crash victim airlifted to HCMC

A serious motorcycle crash this morning sends the rider to Hennepin County Medical Center via air ambulance.  According to the MN State patrol, 50 year old Britt Olson Sr. of Dennison was traveling northbound on Hwy 246 when a truck driven by 32 year old Luis Madrid-Morales broadsided him in the intersection at Co. Road 1.  Firefighter Sean Simonson reports the call came in at about 5:40 this morning.  “Traffic was blocked on Co. Rd. 1 to the west side of 246 so we could land the helicopter otherwise traffic was able to go through single lane during the scene”.  Olson was not wearing a helmet.  We do not know the extent of his injuries but he is expected to survive and posted a picture on Facebook.  The State Patrol is investigating the crash for possible charges to the truck driver.  Their office says it may be a week before that information is available.  A representative of HCMC has not yet returned a call.  NOTE:  according to a facebook post, Olson has had facial surgery with more to come.

$900,000 for a well house

City staff is asking $900,000 to build a house around Well number 6.  The new well was drilled in January near the soccer fields but it’s yet to be housed.  Mayor Graham said, “it’s not a typical house”.  It will hold equipment and chemicals.  The renderings presented to council of the housing looked to blend in with the neighborhood but Council was more interested in making it look more like a pavilion, as it’s in a park.  Perhaps with a shade area with an awning.  This will come back to council.

E. Cannon trail on agenda and new legal disbursements

On Northfield’s agenda tomorrow night are three items related to the E. Cannon river trail project including a cooperative agreement giving Dundas 10 years to pay Northfield for their share of the trail, which is 16{b5761be34e80a16b6d0e4dabc1869c131a263f96a745c82bebdd3b8a4330bfa9} of over $1 million.  They must also approve the purchase of wetland credits.  Because the trail will take up about 4 acres of wetland, the City is obligated to purchase wetland credits to mitigate the impact.  The cost is $23,500 per acre, with an additional 6.5{b5761be34e80a16b6d0e4dabc1869c131a263f96a745c82bebdd3b8a4330bfa9} withdrawal fee is to the Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources (BWSR). The total cost is  $109,645.48.  On the consent agenda are 2 more disbursements to Everett & Vanderweil entered as legal services that add up to over $30,000.  We’ve yet to hear any details of what investigation this money is paying for although we have put in a request for data.

Nfld HS looking to add classes

Superintendent Dr. Chris Richardson says the Northfield High School is looking at, “additional career and technical education classes and business education and industrial technology and in family and consumer sciences”.   He says the pendulum is swinging back and employers are looking now for those who will enter 2 year trade schools rather than 4 year colleges, “we’ve talked with the Chamber and we’ve talked with business people in the community just about how do we get that better balance”.  Right now the high school offers 135 different classes.
