“Hostile Event Training” tonight

Some time this evening, several law enforcement agencies and emergency responders  including Northfield police, EMS and NAFRS will be holding a training exercise at St. Dominic’s School.  Chief Monte Nelson said some call it “Hostile Event” training.  It’s scenario based training for police, fire and medical.  He said the training is for responders to actively make decisions.  He added that they wanted to make sure people in the neighborhood are aware of the training and they don’t panic when they see all the vehicles at the School.  They’ve put out flyers to the community.  EMS Director Brian Edwards said the idea is to raise the stress level of the responders to prepare as much as possible for a real life situation.  It will take about 4 hours from the start to final debriefing.  The big take-away is, Edwards says, “when you train together with these other disciplines and these other agencies you work better together when something actually happens whether it’s a car accident, a structure fire, a SWAT call, anything of that nature.  If we’re working together really well during training, we’re going to work together really well during a real event”.  The fifty participants had classroom training last week to prepare for the training event.  Nelson said it makes a real difference to participate in these scenarios and they use what they learn at many other real calls.  Security will be tight at tonight’s training, they don’t want anyone other than the participants on site.

City of Nfld to fund fireworks for 2017

The Northfield Council last week approved working with the Northfield Historical Society to take over the 4th of July fireworks display.  Executive Director Hayes Scriven had looked to other local organizations to take over the event when the NHS Board voted to stop supporting the event as it’s not part of their mission.  However, he received a lukewarm response.  That’s when he and Chamber President Todd Bornhauser went to the City.   There’s $8,000 in the fund for the fireworks due to previous fundraising.  The deal with the City is for NHS to set up the fireworks with the vendor, pay them and the City would find the appropriate venue and clean up.  The City will then add it to their 2017 budget.  Tomorrow night, Council will hear the Hospital Audit.  Likely there will be other questions.  The City met with the Hospital today.  We will have Mayor Graham in Wednesday morning and President Steve Underdahl on Thursday morning.

Dundas Dome to open November 1st

The Dundas Dome is on track to open November 1st.  Local residents Mike and Sherry Foster and Paul and Shelly Whiteman have signed a development agreement with the City of Dundas.  The 91,000 sq. ft. turfed complex will go up at 901 Cannon Rd. right behind Maurice’s and the Dollar Store.  The Dundas Dome will operate seasonally from November 1st to April 30th.  During the summer the dome will be deflated and stored, however the turf will be available for rental use.  The dome will include 3 practice soccer fields or can be used for a full soccer field or lacrosse.  It will also be able to host 2 regulation softball games at the same time.  They’re now putting together time slots and creating programs.
