Ice Arena?  Liquor Store?

Mayor Graham has been a proponent of the hotel project at The Crossings and is excited for other potential opportunities.  On KYMN this week he mentioned that Brett Reese is also committed, along with Jeff Haase, who is one of the owners of the Country Inn & Suites, to work together with the City and other entities to bring an Ice Arena to Northfield.  Commenting further, Graham said a 2-sheet arena with green space for practice play for soccer and/or softball, will bring tournaments to town, put heads on beds and will be very good for the community.  While this is a future project, Graham says the next big thing is the liquor store.  Coincidentally the City’s new Administrator, Ben Martig, served as project leader for a sports center and a liquor store in Marshall, MN, where he served as their administrator for nearly 8 years.

Volunteer Coordinator needed for Believet

Sam Daly has been training dogs for various reasons for a long time and has now dedicated himself to training service dogs for veterans with PTSD or other ailments related to their service.  Believet was started last year and recently raised $10,000 for the cause.  It’s an expensive endeavor to find, train and fit the dogs with veterans.  Friend and supporter, John Fossum talked about the dogs saying they’re not looking for any specific breed but rather personality and ability to be trained.  The dogs are trained for the specific needs of the veteran such as waking them from a nightmare, keeping people at a safe distance or flipping a light switch.  Whatever they need.  For the vet, the dogs help them assimilate back into community and can often lift them out of depression.  Rates of suicide among veterans is at a critical level.  Dollars and volunteers are needed.  In particular they need a volunteer coordinator.  Go to believet.org.  That’s believe with a t at the end dot org.  I’ll have a link on kymn.net.
