Dramatic rollover seriously injures 2
A rollover seriously injuries 2 women. Just after 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon, Rice County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a rollover in Cannon City township. According to a press release, a vehicle driven by a 21 Paige Ersland of Morristown was traveling south in the 17000 block of Cannon City Blvd. The vehicle ran off the road and struck a driveway embankment. It then launched and tumbled end-over- end before coming to rest on its tires. Her passenger, 21 year old Brittani Alcorn of Farmington was airlifted from the scene. Ersland was airlifted from District One Hospital to a trauma center. It appears neither woman was wearing a seatbelt. The driver did not have a valid license.
The crash is being investigated by the Sheriff’s Office and the State Patrol. UPDATE: Sheriff Dunn said the Ersland is in stable but serious condition, she is expected to survive. Alcorn has been released from North Memorial. No drugs or alcohol were detected.
Faribault man busted with over a pound of meth
A Faribault man is charged with multiple felonies. An informant with the Cannon Valley Drug and Violent Offender Task Force told agents that 40 year old Ezequiel Lopez offered to sell 14 grams of meth for $500. The buy was set up on June 6th and recorded. Agents discovered that Lopez was keeping drugs in storage lockers in Faribault and kept one under surveillance while they obtained a search warrant. On Monday, Lopez arrived at the locker and retrieved a bag. A task force agent followed the van he was in to the owners home where the bag and van were searched. Agents found over 560 grams of methamphetamine and nearly 145 grams of cocaine. Lopez is charged with 7 felonies in all including 1st degree sale of over 10 grams which carries a maximum sentence of 40 years and $1 million fine. Bail has been set at $600,000 without conditions. A hearing is scheduled for July 13th.
Carleton College files motion to dismiss
Carleton College filed a motion Tuesday asking the US District Court to dismiss the complaint filed May 2nd by a recent graduate. The victim alleges she was raped twice and the college’s treatment of her caused even more trauma. In the 49 page lawsuit, filed under Title IX, it’s alleged that Carleton College continued to harm the woman by placing the burden on her to “get over the rapes” without offering her the help, services or accommodations she was entitled to. The College Attorneys are requesting an oral argument. Calls and emails to attorneys for both sides have not been returned.
NHS opens new exhibit and offers FREE admission all day
The family of John Campbell, the founder of Malt-O-Meal, recently gave a collection of historic artifacts and archives to the Northfield Historical Society and tonight is the reception for the first in a series of Malt-O-Meal exhibits at the Museum. Executive Director Hayes Scriven said this is entitled “Malt-O-Meal Originals – An Exhibition in Firsts” including their first successful radio commercial, first employee and more. Curator Stephanie Hess will give a presentation at 6:30. The other special reason to go today is FREE admission is being offered all day. The exhibit is open right now! 408 Division Street, downtown Northfield.
