Self Defense? The question hangs in the air while BCA investigates local homicide
Northfield Police Chief Monte Nelson updated media on the relationship between the women involved in Sunday’s shooting on Jefferson Road. He said the deceased, Lilly Kirckof and the 70 something woman suspected of shooting her were not related, they had been long time “acquaintances” and also had a, “like a landlord/tenant type relationship”. Although the older woman was taken into custody, she was released and remains cooperative. Nelson would not name her, “it’s an open and active investigation. Yes, we’re not comfortable releasing the name”. Some of that is for her protection. In
the press release he said, at this time, they have not ruled out self-defense as the cause of the shooting. The investigation has the potential to take months, “we’re relying on BCA, they’re crime scene team came down collected evidence, evaluated evidence. There’s a lot of evidence they’re going to have to evaluate on their end”. [They have specialized equipment that local law enforcement agencies do not] Nelson added that part of the reason for the length of the investigation has to do with the BCA’s workload. They also cover the Twin Cities. Nelson asked the public to be patient as the details are sorted out.
Noise Ordinance chimes midnight
Party on! The Northfield City Council approved an Unlawful Noise Ordinance last night that would allow outdoor music till midnight on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights in the downtown and industrial district. Sunday through Wednesday they’ll shut down at 10pm. At their last meeting they proposed an 11pm shutdown on Thursday nights but Councilor Nakasian said that more than 2 time limits could be harder to administrate. She proposed the amendment to extend the time to midnight on Thursday as well adding that it would be “preliminary” to “see how that goes”. The amendment passed 4 to 2. Pownell and Peterson White voted against it but they unanimously passed the ordinance. Peterson White was compelled to support it because she believes we need something adding, “I encourage continuing feedback from our business owners and people living especially near the area”. A summary publication must be printed and then it becomes law. For residential areas, the Ordinance has a 10pm shutdown Sunday through Thursday and 11pm on Friday and Saturday. The vast majority of noise complaints have been within neighborhoods. City of Northfield Council meeting 8-16-16 … Click below to view the original ordinance:

Citing safety, Scriven scraps this year’s Outlaw Run
The Outlaw Run scheduled for August 27th has been canceled. Northfield Historical society Executive Director and the committee members made the hard decision to cancel this year’s ride due to road construction that has caused at least 3 accidents along the route near Mazeppa. Scriven said, “This was not an easy decision to make. When we’re planning the route we have to consider that it’s not just one rider or two riders but we’re looking upwards of 300/325 riders”. Although road conditions were perfect a month ago, he said, “after driving the route myself on Monday and looking at alternative routes, we just couldn’t find what we considered a safe route around the road construction over by Mazeppa”. He added, planning a large group motorcycle ride requires intricate planning of routes, with careful consideration of turns and using as many low-traffic roads as possible.” says Scriven. “But the safety of our riders is our primary concern.” Riders who have pre-registered will be refunded their entire registration fee. NOTE: The City of Northfield had no decision in canceling the event.
