Public gets schooling on Back to School traffic
Labor Day is coming and that means school starts! Northfield Police Chief Monte Nelson said the schools do a great job of getting information out to students and parents and, of course, his office uses the radio. Nelson said, unfortunately, every year they get the same complaints about traffic issues including ignoring crossing guards and speeding. He said, “without fail the most guilty
parties are the people who should be most aware, those people who are bringing their kids to and from school”. Nelson included those who work for the school as well. He added, for those who don’t have kids in school, it’s a sudden change in traffic patterns with buses, kids walking and biking and sporting events, and that means everyone needs to be thinking about it. Nelson,”Pay attention to buses, give them lots of room, make sure you stop”. He said, despite all the warnings on buses, people still violate the stop arms. When you see that orange flag of a crossing guard, you also need to stop. There will be a new crossing at Arbor Street on hwy 246 at the Northfield Middle School. Nelson said, “big change to traffic flow and expectations and speed limits out there”. Watch for the sign for speeds to drop.
The Network Works
The Northfield Beyond the Yellow Ribbon network has been in place for over a year now and the network is working. Members Beth Ayotte-Naumann and Todd Bornhauser talked about their first big request for a serviceman’s pregnant wife. Naumann said, “we reached out to the business partners and between Todd, myself and a few others, we contacted some local businesses and we were able to get the materials and the labor donated for a deck to be built”. Bornhauser said the Chamber business community were polled last year on what they might have to offer in terms of products and/or services. Local service organizations stepped forward with labor and more. Chair Virginia Kaczmarek said they’ve had a variety of requests including returning military personnel who’ve needed medical help. She said the cool thing about the network is that they have different groups to handle all kinds of different needs so that when they get a request, they send it to the appropriate group and they jump into action. They’re always looking for folks to join the network. Go to northfieldyellowribbon.org to get involved. There’s been a constant conflict or war since 1989 and at any given time there are those in our community serving.
What’s new to this year’s DJJD Horseshoe Hunt
And the hunt begins! The first clue of the 19th Defeat of Jesse James Days Horseshoe Hunt was posted at 7 this morning. This year Clue Master Tim Freeland started the hunt on Wednesday adding, “the true, tried hunters can now hunt over the holiday weekend”. He said Friday, Saturday and Sunday will be the “big days” as those are the “reveal days”. Something else that’s new is adding Dundas as a potential hiding place. The question is, he says, “would I dare put it there the first year or is that too obvious?”. It’s the largest pot yet with $1500 for the person who finds the shoe AND has a registered DJJD button. Without the button, the payout is $300. With quotes being used as clues, Freeland said, “whether they’re real or not, you’ll have to decide. I’ll put in an extra KYMN clue, there are lots of good books out there on the actual raid and lots of quotes from the guys”. This year it’s about the “nitty gritty” of the raid. Last year was about the events. A complete list of rules are listed on djjd.org. If you find the shoe, you’ll also find instructions on what to do! Be sure to listen mornings at 7 for the clue of the day and find it on kymn.net.
