Traveling Wall Vietnam Memorial with flags and tears

The Traveling Wall arrived yesterday afternoon at the Rice County Fairgrounds after traveling with an escort.  Sheriff Troy Dunn led the escort of law enforcement, fire and rescue, over 100 motorcycles and 40 to 50 vehicles.  He said it was a very uplifting experience, “for me and for everybody that was there, to see all along that route people standing along the roadside with their flags and signs.  And I saw a lot of tears

shed both at the end and along the way”.  Many Vietnam veterans were not welcomed home, so this, the Traveling Wall, a replica of the memorial in Washington, DC, represents a Welcome Home.  Dunn said, “we had the Northfield Fire Dept. and the Faribault Fire Dept. ladder trucks kind of as a welcome that everybody drove through when we came into the Fairgrounds”.  Tonight at 6:30 is the Opening Ceremony of the exhibit which will be on display through Labor Day. All of those involved in the ceremony have a connection to the Vietnam War.  Organizer Virginia VanSluis said, “this is strictly people who served in that particular war.  They will be the Speakers, they will be the Honored Guests, they will be the people laying the wreaths at the Wall.  It is for them”.  There are over 58,000 names on the Wall for those who gave all for our Country.  There is no cost and the exhibit will be open 24/7.

No Wake restriction lifted

Due to the water levels receding in Rice county, Sheriff Dunn lifted the No Wake Restrictions on all lakes in the  County as of yesterday at 5:00 pm.  The Cannon River has dropped about 2 ½ ft since last week at this time, according to United States Geological Survey water information site. More rain is in the forecast before the start of the Defeat of Jesse James Days celebration prompting committee members to make contingency plans should they need to move some events.   KYMN will keep you posted.

For Northfield, DWI enforcement continues through DJJD

The DWI enforcement continues through DJJD.  Northfield Police Chief Monte Nelson said when they do their enforcement waves some people think they’re just trying to make lots of arrests, which they’re happy to do if you’re breaking the law, but more time and energy is spent on education.  Getting information to the public to get them to think about things.  His department gets about $20,000 a year in TZD Grants to allow additional Officer shift for the various enforcements including seatbelt use and distracted driving as well as DWI.
