Dundas TIFs to end
With two TIF districts becoming decertified at the end of the year, the City of Dundas is banking on more dollars as they set their preliminary levy high. Administrator John McCarthy explains that Tax Increment Financing is a process used by communities to help build infrastructure to support growth. With the end of the TIF, it means those taxes will not be designated for those specific properties but will go back on the regular tax roll. The TIFs
include District 3, with a term of 8 years, College City Beverage and District 2 which is most of the properties along Highway 3 was a 20 year term. McCarthy said this will increase tax capacity substantially which, McCarthy says, should result in a decrease of “around 8{b5761be34e80a16b6d0e4dabc1869c131a263f96a745c82bebdd3b8a4330bfa9}” on city taxes. McCarthy said the City is also working on 8 development projects in various stages right now.
Nfld Council looks at 3{b5761be34e80a16b6d0e4dabc1869c131a263f96a745c82bebdd3b8a4330bfa9} preliminary levy
The Northfield City Council met for a work session last night. City Administrator Ben Martig was in studio this morning, sitting in for Mayor Dana Graham through the election season. Council discussed the preliminary levy which is one of the primary sources of revenue for the City. Property taxes, besides other local fees, make up about half of the general fund operation. Staff recommends a 3{b5761be34e80a16b6d0e4dabc1869c131a263f96a745c82bebdd3b8a4330bfa9} increase. Martig said Council will continue to work on the budget after that time. The preliminary levy cannot go up but there was some discussion about it coming down from there. The preliminary levy will be set at the September 20th council meeting. Martig says they’re trying to “beef up” their facilities fund as their are some deferred maintenance projects with streets and parks. The final levy is set at the end of the year. Council also discussed the CIP and CEP and the Enterprise fund. We’ll have more on thost items tomorrow. Martig’s full interview is posted on kymn.net.
Nfld school population sees a boost
Northfield Schools have more students. Superintendent Dr. Matt Hillmann said that at the end of school last year, they were at exactly 4,000 students. At the beginning of school last week, they have 4,035 students enrolled. Four thousand was the highest number in former Superintendent Richardson’s career. Hillmann said over the summer they had a significant increase in enrollment. Typically the beginning of a school year is the “high water” mark and they may lose a few due to moves or other factors, however, Hillmann says an increase in enrollment speaks well of the schools and the community. These numbers do not cover the Charter Schools.
