Attempted abduction “did not occur”

Yesterday afternoon the Cannon Falls Police department was looking for a couple who may have had information on the attempted child abduction on Sunday at Hannah’s Bend Park. I spoke with Chief Jeff McCormick around 3 o’clock but by 8:30 last night, the case was closed.  In a press release, McCormick said The Cannon Falls Police Department has found that the reported Attempted Abduction from October 9th did not occur. While conducting a subsequent interview the victim

acknowledged that the incident had not occurred as reported and there was no abduction attempt. McCormick added, “As we breathe a sigh of relief, the Cannon Falls Police Department would like to encourage parents to capitalize on this opportunity to discuss and/or develop a safety plan with their children. There was a tremendous outpouring of compassion from our community and the Cannon Falls Police Department asks people to not lose that compassion. It’s important to remember that there is still a 10-year-old girl that we want to avoid having traumatized further because of what happened.

Nfld Finance Director recommends some increases in Utility rates

“We have plenty of cash in the water fund to cover all of our operations and capital projects”, said Northfield Finance Director Melanie Lammers speaking to the Council this week.  She recommended no increase in that fund.  However, she did recommend a 3{b5761be34e80a16b6d0e4dabc1869c131a263f96a745c82bebdd3b8a4330bfa9} increase in the wastewater fund due to two upcoming capital expense projects of over $1 million each.   The garbage fund remains steady but Lammers recommends a 6{b5761be34e80a16b6d0e4dabc1869c131a263f96a745c82bebdd3b8a4330bfa9} increase in the Stormwater Fund for 2017 as the City takes a comprehensive look at all 26 stormwater ponds.  This means about a $1 per acre increase per month, 25 cents for a ¼ acre lot.  Overall, Lammers says the impact estimates for residential will be anywhere from 82 cents to $2.73 a month.  These numbers will increase depending on usage, industrial users seeing the largest jump of $2500 per month.

Northfield Mayoral Candidate forums and video

Northfield Mayor Dana Graham and his challenger Councilor Rhonda Pownell squared off this morning in a candidate forum hosted by the Northfield Area Chamber of Commerce along with KYMN and the Northfield News.  Issues centered on economic development, budgeting and prioritizing of projects, the fire facility, Council civility and voting blocks as well as the relationship to the City Charter, among other topics.  We hope to have video of the event up by tomorrow morning.  There will be a Northfield School Board candidate forum tomorrow morning from 7:30 to 9:30.  Doors will open at 7 with an opportunity for the public to meet the candidates.  It will be held at City Hall in Council Chambers.  Video of the State Candidate Forum for District 20, 20B and 58B that took place on Tuesday is posted on kymn.net.

Seatbelt enforcement wave starts Friday

Seat Belt enforcement starts Friday and lasts through the month.  Northfield Police Chief Monte Nelson said his department presents a lot of educational pieces throughout the community.  In particular he talks to parents.  He said, “the single most dangerous time for all of our kids until they’re in their 20’s is every time they’re in a motor vehicle. It’s the number one killer”.  It’s also when the most significant injuries occur.  Through a grant from Toward Zero Deaths, there will be extra officers on the road.  The idea is not to hand out tickets but rather educate drivers and passengers. Ninety one people killed last year were unbelted.  More information with statistics is on kymn.net.  PSA
