Tragedy takes two

A community is mourning the loss of two lives after 61 year old Richard Larson, a retired Faribault Police Captain and Vietnam veteran, shot and killed his ex-wife, 59 year old Barbara Larson and then killed himself.  Police responded to the Faribault Chamber of Commerce on Friday just after noon when a caller reported 2 people down inside the building.  Officers arrived to discover a man and woman deceased behind the counter.  No other employees were present.  The Larsons divorced in 2014 and earlier last week, Barbara took out an harassment restraining order against Richard.  Faribault Police Chief Andy Bohlen said in a press release, “Being such a small community, Faribault PD has worked with both in the past.  Our collective hearts are broken after responding to such a tragedy”.  The Larson’s leave behind 2 sons who ask that you reach out to anyone who may be feeling depressed or hopeless.  The Faribault Chamber will be closed this week.  Funerals are set for Wednesday and Thursday.

Xcel reported spotty outages

Xcel Energy reported various power outages in the area early this morning.  The traffic lights were out at Hwy 3 and 2nd street for a time.  They warn there may be more off and on with the winds after the freezing rain we had.  KYMN’s FM 95.1 signal was lost for a time yesterday as ice built up on the equipment.  It’s up and running now.  Remember you can always get us on kymn.net, download our mobile app on Tune-In radio and, of course, AM 1080 too.

Northfield Shares reaps grant dollars

Northfield Shares, a community foundation centered on philanthropy, volunteerism and collaborative leadership will receive a “capacity-building” grant from the Ames Fund of the Minneapolis Foundation.   The grant of $140,000 is payable over 3 years.  It will enable the organization to increase its staffing and provide tools necessary for the community foundation to succeed.  Additionally, the grant will help to increase Northfield Shares’ community impact by making more dollars available for granting to local organizations. Northfield Shares will also use this funding to further develop its volunteer program.  Board Chair, Craig Ellingboe said, “A friend of mine recently shared that ‘blessings come just at the right time.’ This gift has come just at the right time to give our community foundation the wherewithal for moving to the next level. Developing a community foundation is a bit of a pioneer journey going into new territory, and this gift will do several important things.” One of the core opportunities provided by the grant is the chance for Northfield Shares to hire its first full-time executive director.  Northfield Shares was founded to advance philanthropy, inspire volunteerism and promote collaborative leadership. The organization was formed when 5th Bridge and Northfield Area Foundation merged. For more information visit www.northfieldshares.org.
