On January 24, 2017 at 8:30 am, Rice County Sheriff’s Correctional Officer Steve Tuma presented Sheriff Troy Dunn with a Service Flag banner to be posted at the Sheriff’s Office while he is being deployed to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Steve Tuma is a Staff Sergeant with the 257th Military Police Company based out of Monticello, MN. The unit will be deployed for approximately 1 year for this mission.
The Service flag is an official banner authorized by the Department of Defense for display by families who have members serving in the Armed Forces during any period of war or hostilities the United States may be engaged in for the duration of such deployment. The Service flag may also be displayed by an organization to honor the members of that organization serving during a period of deployment. This flag was placed in a window near the entrance to the Sheriff’s Office to recognize Steve’s dedication and service to country.
Steve was born and raised in Lonsdale, MN and currently resides in the Owatonna area with his wife, Kelly. Steve has worked with the Sheriff’s Office for three years and has served in the military for 17 years. This will be the fourth deployment of his military service, with two tours in Iraq and one tour in Bosnia. We thank Steve and wish him a safe deployment and a safe return to his family at home and at work.
