Sidewalks, strategic plans and presentations on Nfld agenda; Open House for bridge work on Hwy 56; Absentee voting available now for Township elections; Place a poem at your place

As the clock ticked toward 10 pm last week, the Northfield Council gave themselves little time to discuss their Strategic Plan. Administrator Ben Martig, instead gave a brief overview. The Council met twice in early 2015 to begin the process of developing a 3 to 5 year strategic plan for the City.   Martig said the plan enables the City to create an organizational purpose and direction.  They’ll get feedback from the Boards, Commission and the public.  Council will then establish

clear priorities and measurable targets.  Tonight they’ll revisit the subject as a discussion item at the end of the meeting.  There are several presentations, they’ll vote on adding sidewalks on Marvin Lane, an item discussed along with the 2017 street reclamation project and they’ll vote on starting their meetings at 6pm instead of 7pm.  Martig and Mayor Pownell will be in studio at 7:20 tomorrow morning.

Open House for bridge work on Hwy 56

Kenyon City Hall is holding a public information Open House tomorrow from 4:30 to 6pm to learn more about the replacement of two Highway 56 bridges this summer.  One is over the North Fork of the Zumbro River and the other is over Prairie Creek near Stanton.  The public will learn about the plans, timelines, traffic management and more.  The plan is for construction from May 1st through mid-October.

Place a poem at your place

Northfield’s Arts and Culture Commission along with the Public Library are encouraging residents to submit poems for the Sidewalk Poetry contest.  The City’s first Poet Laureate, Rob Hardy, said from 4th graders to retirees, there are poems from residents of all ages and walks of life.  Commenting on why they don’t add the names of the poets in cement, he said, “I think it’s nice to think of  the poems as belonging to all of Northfield and so it’s kind of the voices of Northfield”.  You can find those names on the city’s website where there’s a map of all them. Bill North added that the poems are available.  So if you’re having sidewalk work done, you can go online and choose a poem you’d like in front of your home!  Go online to find out the details on submitting.  You have until next Tuesday!  Sidewalk poetry is supported by SEMAC – Southeastern Minnesota Arts Grant.  How to apply    And more information find HERE
