NCRC to get overview before lease extension
The Northfield Community Resource Center will get a financial analysis in preparation for a new management agreement. The City Council approved a budget amendment to hire AEM Financial Solutions. The cost is about $12,000 which will come from, “a capital reserve or unreserved fund balance, it’s technically called”, said City Administrator Ben Martig. He added said this is out of their usual scope of work. AEM will, “put a clear financial picture together of this building and make some recommendations as it relates to a starting point on how you would allocate costs back out on the facility and also how do we plan into the future expenses, capital expenses, how much reserve we should have. How do you factor in in the lease payments some of the preservation of the building moving forward”. Martig said it’s combining financial statements from the different partners before negotiations for a lease extension with the NCRC group. Staff, Council and the partners will consider policy issues. Martig said, “I’ve been meeting with the NCRC group, representatives from the Community Action Center, Three Rivers Community Action, Northfield Senior Center as well as the Bluewater Management group that helps with the operations”. They all support the financial analysis. Martig said it will still be a challenge to put together an agreement by the end of the year.
Smoke ’em if you got ’em
The Dundas City Council looked into going tobacco-free at all their parks. Administrator John McCarthy said the Council, “decided basically after a lot of discussion and concern expressed that it might be a little bit more government regulation than they want to get into”. They’re concerned about enforcement issues primarily. Many cities are easing into the regulation.
Lighten Up for local non-profits
Carleton College’s Center for Community and Civic Engagement (CCCE) will host its annual “Lighten Up!” Garage Sale on this Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, from 8 to noon in Carleton’s West Gym. The popular sale converts the unwanted year-end possessions of Carleton students into bargains for area residents and cash for local charities. Each year, Carleton partners with three local non-profits to organize the sale. Proceeds from the sale are split between Project Friendship, which teams up with Carleton and St. Olaf students to offer mentoring programs for local youth; The Key (Northfield Union of Youth), a nonprofit youth center run by young people; and the Northfield Area Special Olympics, which offers opportunities for people with special needs to get involved in sports. In 2016, “Lighten Up” raised over $30K. The West Gym will be filled with donated items including clothing and outdoor gear, books, sporting goods, household items, furniture, bedding, electronics and much more. For more information regarding the event, contact Cindy Plash at (507) 222-5477. The West Gym is located at 321 Division Street North (Highway 19 East) on the Carleton College campus in Northfield.
