Local companies are investing in their businesses. That’s good news to Northfield Community Development Director Chris Heineman. Cardinal Glass is doing another internal expansion. They’ll be adding another line, expanding their services to the southern Metro. They service many major glass providers throughout the region. Heineman said it’s about a $10 mil project. All Flex and Aurora Pharmaceuticals are looking to expand. Heineman says both of them
would be significant expenditures in their current facilities. They’re look to expand lines and products. Post Brands is also looking to expand here in Northfield. Staff has been working with them for about 6 months. After Post bought MOM Brands, there was some fear that they would leave.
Rice County assesses space needs
Rice County Commissioners were presented with a space needs study. They’re running out of space in several areas. The jail being one of them. Other improvements will be to Courthouse Security. Commissioner Galen Malecha said they had a presentation from Wold Architects. He said if they were to do all the improvements suggested, it would add up to about $30 million. They would not do it all of it once but phase in the expansions. Malecha said first would be the County Government Services Center. They’re running out of room in the Social Services department. They would add a 7 to 10,000 sq ft addition on the east side where a road was closed off some time ago. After that, it would be improvements to the jail. They’ve received State grants for improved security at the Courthouse. They would close off the main southside entrance and make people go through the west side with the metal detector.
DJJD Ambassadors make history as Gonzalez named Queen of the Lakes
“Ladies and Gentlemen, may I present to you the Minneapolis Aquatennial Queen of the Lakes from the community of… NORTHFIELD…. ” With that, the crowd erupted in screams, cheering, words of praise! An emotional moment as outgoing Mpls Aquatennial queen of the Lakes, Carolyn Meyer crowned Vanessa Gonzalez. For the second year in a row and the first time in history, the Queen of the Lakes comes from Northfield. Gonzalez and Meyer, were both Defeat of Jesse James Days Ambassadors. The program provides personal and professional development opportunities and a small scholarship. Julie Eddy has led the program for decades and has dedicated an enormous amount of time and talent to guide the candidates through hundreds of appearances. Alongside her has been Shelly Brady. Gonzalez was one of 53 young women vying for the Queen of the Lakes crown. A program that will provide her opportunities all over the country as she represents Minneapolis and the wider community. Gonzalez is pursuing a double major in Spanish and Elementary Education at the University of Northwestern. The candidates are judged on a variety of criteria including their poise, professionalism, public speaking ability, current and future goals, education and co-curricular/extracurricular activities.
