Heavy – an American Memoir

On today’s 15 with the Author, Teri Knight talks with Kiese Laymon with his newest book, “Heavy – an American Memoir”.  Kiese is an American author, editor and a professor of English and Creative Writing at the University of Mississippi.  “Heavy” is his story of growing up a southern black boy with a fat body and a brilliant and flawed mother. It includes his battle with weight, his physical abuse from his highly regarded mother (a professor and activist) and the lies we tell ourselves and each other.  The book is raw and powerful. The title HEAVY, has various meanings, not just his physical weight but the weight of all that he and his mom carried. kieselaymon.com
