Northfield Police Chief Issues Statement regarding George Floyd

May 29, 2020

Dear City of Northfield Community Members,

The officers of the Northfield Police Department value the relationships and partnerships we have built with all of our community partners, in every culture, with people of every race and with people of every immigration status. Our vow has been, and will continue to be that officers treat all community members with dignity and respect. In particular, the Department has worked to improve relationships and understanding with our city’s Latino community and with other partner groups such as Growing Up Healthy, the Mayor’s Youth Council, our local faith community, and many others.

Northfield officers are trained on and will continue training on implicit bias, crisis intervention, race and equity, response to people in mental health crisis, and use of force issues. Additionally, we will work to ensure the safety of anyone who chooses to legally and peacefully protest, and ask community members to be mindful of when, where, and how they choose to gather or protest.

The Northfield Police Department values our community partnerships and thanks all who support our work to provide fair, equitable public safety services. We must all work together to help ensure the safety of our community members, our businesses, and our emergency response personnel. The Department asks that we all work together to ensure voices are heard, this tragedy is not repeated, and all members of our community feel valued and safe.

Our strength is defined by how we treat and nurture each other. We are committed to make our community one that supports healing, advocates for meaningful action, and moves forward for a better future together.

– Chief of Police Monte Nelson
