On June 26, 2020 at approximately 2:16 am the Cannon Falls Police Department assisted by the Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call reporting the assault of a small child. When the Officer arrived, he spoke with the caller who met the Officer outside the residence and reported there had been an argument occurring about keys for a vehicle, when the suspect pushed the small child. The officer started walking to the residence to speak with the suspect. Rear motion lights turned on and the Officer heard a vehicle start and drive away. The caller and the officer saw a vehicle driving away and the caller stated that was the suspect. The officer left the caller and attempted to stop the suspect. The suspect was several blocks ahead of the officer.
The Officer activated the emergency lights and siren, but the suspect had accelerated and
entered onto Highway 52 headed north. The officer was still a distance behind the suspect,
but could see the taillights. As the suspect approached Dakota County Road 86, the suspect
pulled in front of a semi-truck and the Officer could no longer see the taillights. The Officer
continued on Highway 52 past County Road 86 and when getting to taillights he could see,
realized it was not the suspect vehicle. The Officer ended the pursuit and turned around. The
Officer observed a semi-truck stopped on the shoulder by County Road 86 so the officer
stopped to check if the truck had been struck or damaged by the suspect vehicle.
The semi-truck driver advised the Officer that the suspect vehicle had tried to exit at County
Road 86 and lost control, leaving the roadway, crossed the entrance lane and coming to rest
in the center area. The Officer requested that the State Patrol, Ambulance and Fire respond.
During the investigation of the crash, the Officer learned that the vehicle has been stolen in
Minneapolis during an armed carjacking on June 17, 2020. The suspect was transported by
the ambulance with what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries. The State Patrol is
handling the crash investigation. The Minneapolis Police Department took custody of the
crashed stolen vehicle.
The investigation of the assault and fleeing is ongoing and the results of the investigation will
be sent to the Goodhue County Attorney for formal charges. The suspect has not named
because he has not been arrested or charged at this time.
